Digital Keystone develops cloud software solutions for scalable video storage, video streaming and video AI in the cloud. Their full suite of software and tools enable breakthrough products and services through global deployment partnerships. Their advanced solutions are known for powering high end projects like Super Bowls, Olympic games, Royal weddings, self-driving automobiles and autonomous robots. The company licenses their software solutions to some of the biggest names in tech, including companies like Microsoft, Sony and Comcast.
Throughout the years, the company started to see the shift from analog to digital solutions as an opportunity to develop a new wave of technological inventions and innovations to support these new platforms for their clients. Suddenly companies like Comcast needed to have digital video solutions to support everything from mobile phones to Smart TVs and gaming devices. Yet other clients needed new applications for transitioning from old legacy systems into the new digital era.
Since Digital Keystone already had a deep knowledge of the software development space, they were able to create and deploy a full spectrum of new patented technologies to support their client’s digital transition in the marketplace. They soon realized that many of their patents had significant value, and if done properly, they could be licensed to companies that needed access to those patent rights, which would drive a new source of revenue to them. Because of their background in technology, they had a tremendous amount of expertise in licensing software, but limited experience in licensing intellectual property. This led them to launch a search for an IP partner in the marketplace who could help them navigate the patent licensing landscape.
After interviewing a number of patent licensing companies, Digital Keystone decided to partner with VideoLabs.
“VideoLabs was the most impressive company we met with because not only did they bring years of patent licensing expertise that we did not have, but they also gave us a clear pathway for how to protect our IP and fully unlock the value of our patents in the marketplace,” said Paolo Siccardo, President and CEO of Digital Keystone. “It is difficult to license patents or to even get in the door to find the right people connected to IP licensing, but VideoLabs already had these relationships in place. This means we didn’t have to jump through hoops, since they were able to get our patents right in front of the decision makers.”
Siccardo went on to share that the ethical component in an IP partner was critically important to him. He stated that many of the firms in their vetting process left too many unanswered questions on how to exploit their patent portfolio professionally and ethically, and they lacked the ability to bring a strong value proposition to the table.
However, this was not the case with VideoLabs. “We were impressed by VideoLabs’ team of highly reputable, recognized leaders in IP, legal and technology, which gave us confidence in their capabilities. They also put us first by developing a customized plan that aligned with our business goals. Additionally, they were willing to take on financial risks that other companies wouldn’t consider as appropriate for the potential value of the IP. And finally, they presented us with a compelling and transparent compensation model to ensure we received fair value that justified the unique level of expertise and innovation in our patents. We simply could not ask for a better partner,” stated Siccardo.
Not only was Digital Keystone able to find a trusted partner in VideoLabs, giving them peace of mind knowing that their assets were being ethically licensed, but they were also able to gain full assurance that their IP contribution to the video industry would continue to be recognized.
Additionally, Digital Keystones was able to realize multiple tangible benefits early on from the VideoLabs partnership.
